Beware the Internet

My husband and I use the internet a lot for purchasing everyday items that we can't get easily.  By using the internet to make purchases online, we take the risk of compromising our credit card information. In the last couple of years we have had our credit card information stolen resulting in purchases that were not of our doing. One specific incident, our card information was used for a service that will write papers for a fee. The same individual also purchased a hotel room.

Using the internet can be great when you can't get to the store, especially when many websites provide free shipping.  You take the risk, though, of someone taking your personal information and using for their own. You must decide, is it worth the risk?

Envisioning Web 3.0 in Education

I found a presentation on Prezi that helped me to envision how I would be able to Web 3.0 in the classroom.

Forum Reviews

After reading some of the forum entries, it has given me some insight of what others think of some of the tools that are being used in the classroom and gave me some ideas of how to use these tools.

I like the idea of using surveys to create a baseline at the beginning of the year to see where students are at. This then helps to figure out what students know and don't know. I also like the idea of using surveys to get to know the students. I started using this at the beginning of the year, but reading about what others do with it, it seems like something I might try.

Reading some of the forum posts about Google Docs, has also shown some great ideas, but also some difficulties. It is such an easy tool to use, and allows you to connect with students much easier.  A couple issues I found after reading some posts include the limited features it has compared to Microsoft Office, and the requirement of the Internet to use it. besides these issues, it really is a useful tool to use in the classroom.

I have been able to get some great ideas by reading forum posts. I can take what I have read, tweak it to make it work for me, and make it my own to use in my classroom. Instead of creating something from scratch.

Technology in the Future

A question that I was asked is "how will educators use technology in the future?" Its a tough question, because who knows what the future holds. One thing that is true for the future is that technology is not going away. It's definitely the way of  the future.

I do think the future will be about access. Having the opportunity to learn anywhere at anytime just by the click of the mouse of the tap of a finger is already emerging. Teaching is going to become more social; possibly even moving to more online classes, even in secondary education. We may eventually teach to students who are across the country. What's also going to be the front most in future technology is the use of cloud based storage. It's already making its way in to schools, for example the school I teach at. It makes it very convenient to create a document and send it easily to every student in my class.

These are just a few things that are already in the works to becoming the way of the future. I'm sure there will be plenty more things that I can't even imagine.

Wordle

After telling you a little about myself, here is a shortened version using Wordle.

Wordle is such a great tool for teaching and learning. There are so many ways to use it in the classroom. It can be used as an icebreaker for the beginning of the year to get to know my students. It can be used as a vocabulary builder. Students can use Wordle as a way to reinforce important vocabulary words by putting in a unit at a time. I can also use Wordle to prioritize concepts in math that are the most important to teach. I could copy the standards for my class and see what words are used the most.

I'm sure there are several more great ideas, but these are some that could be beneficial to teaching mathematics.

About Me

My name is Emily Carr. I am a math teacher at Farmington Senior High School. I am currently working on my 5th year of teaching 9th grade Algebra 1. I taught for three years at Potosi R-3 and am now working on my 2nd year at Farmington R-7. I have been the teacher for a few years now; now it's my turn to be the student again. I have gone back to school to further my education by getting my Masters in Education Technology.
"Internet in Education" is the first class I am taking to work on my degree. I was asked the first week of school how I use internet on a day to day basis. I use the Internet a lot for lesson planning and coming up with ideas for teaching. I have found several awesome blogs that have helped me develop creative lesson plans to implement in the classroom. This year I am working on creating a website to help students and parents stay up to date with what is going on in my class. It's a work in progress, but should be useful when it is finished. I was never excited about creating something on the web before, but since starting to create something that can be so useful for students and parents, it has made me super excited.
Besides working on getting my masters, I have a 3 month old daughter that keeps me plenty busy. She is my pride and joy and what I look forward to after a hard day at work. I also love to work on crafts. I am an avid user of Pinterest. You can say I have a "Pinterest house".  I also love to spend time outdoors. My husband and I have gone on several hikes in Missouri and Colorado and plan on making a trip back out west to hike some more.
